Arts Sutton was founded in 1980 by a group of artists and residents who wanted to set up a place to display visual art and arts & crafts. In 1986, after redefining its mission and orientation, Arts Sutton was recognized by the Ministry of Culture and Communications as an artists’ centre for the promotion of art and received its first grants, making it possible for the Gallery to move into the gymnasium of the former Sutton elementary school. These premises were renovated in 1992 with the help of funding from the Ministry of Culture and Communications and the Town. Since 1994, the Gallery has been funded by members, private donors and the Town of Sutton.
